Seriously, without any exaggeration, I believe this book will be a classic... It clearly explains the reasons why most people do the bad things that they do, how you can cope with such bad behaviour, and even how to take practical steps to FIX such bad behaviour so the difficult people will want to change their attitudes and bad habits! I have studied more than 130 self-help books over the last few years, and this book is one of my favourites... on the same level as "The Magic of Thinking Big", "Crucial Conversations", and "Boundaries"... The authors explain how there are 4 main types of difficult people: People who want to: (1) Get it done; (2) Get it done right; (3) Get along with people; and (4) Get appreciation... and when they cannot get what they want, or they are getting what they don''t want, each of these people can be: (1) Controlling, dominating or bullying like aggressive tanks; (2) Nit-picking and critical like perfectionists; (3) "Yes" people or servile obsequious people who try to please everyone but get very little done; and (4) Boasters, braggers, and negative people who are trying to "feel important" and bring attention to themselves; respectively... The authors explain, in great detail, how to deal with each of these "difficult" types of people, and give practical examples on how to get them to "think differently" so they can change their difficult behaviours. This book is full of practical advice, based on solid research and many real-world experiences, and I am going to study it several times (at least 3 or 4 times) because it really is THAT GOOD! The book is concisely written with a summary at the end of each chapter so you can quickly remember what you read for dealing with each type of difficult personality. There is a lot of bonus material such as chapters dealing with basic communication skills, guidance to phone conversations, guidance to emails correspondence, and guidance for changing your own attitude. I just wish I read this book 20 years ago since the people who appear most successful in our society seem to have the best people skills as opposed to technical skills.

The main stereotypes given didn''t seem real to me, and the examples given also seemed unrealistic, jokey or contrived, and they were nearly all centred around office work. It might be useful for someone who works in human resources was only thing that occurred to me, but too superficial for any genuine difficulties in what I would call ''real life''. The only pages that shone for me were a couple of pages about changing our own perspective. I really must stop buying these American self-help books - they are nearly always such a disappointment.
