Description

The Black Keys release their tenth studio album, DeltaKream, via Nonesuch Records. The recordcelebrates the band’s roots, featuring eleven Mississippi hill country blues standards that they have loved since they were teenagers, before they were a band, including songs by R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney recorded Delta Kream at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville; they were joined by musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton, long-time members of the bands of blues legends including R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. The album takes its name from William Eggleston’s iconic Mississippi photograph that is on its cover.

After nine previous albums, the gritty country rock band takes its sound to its blues core. The eleven Mississippi standards are performed with appropriate heat and sweat, and even if finely recorded in urban, sophisticated Nashville (we hear some studio talk), we feel that we should be instead at a rural road junction joint for full effect. Songsmiths R. L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, John Lee Hooker, Fred McDowell, and John Lee Williams are covered and the duo have blues veterans Kenny Brown, guitar, and Eric Deaton, bass, in support. Up-tempo and slow, deep blues are included. The thick characteristic rock sound of Dan Auerbach''s electric guitar and tenor voice and Patrick Carney''s heavy drumming continue in this issue. The two electric guitars, sliding and picking, work nicely together. The organ in three tracks is played by Ray Jacildo. This is an excellent production by the Black Keys; getting back to roots is always a good venture.

The best and worst thing about this album is its obsession with the blues. I can respect what Auerbach and Carney are doing here, and I''m sure this was a passion project for them. If you''re among those Black Keys fans who prefer their jazzier side, as opposed to their rockier side, I''m sure this one will be a treat for you.

But if you''re one of those "other" types of fans who want more than what I''ve described above, I''m afraid this one is gonna be a disappointment. There are no standout tracks here that I can find. There''s no "Lo/Hi" like in Let''s Rock. No "Gold on the Ceiling" like in El Camino. Certainly nothing like the tracks from my favorite album, Brothers. A lot of this is because most of the songs sound similar to each other. I suppose that might be good for the album as a whole, since you get a consistent emotion through the entire album. But the problem is that the tracks feel repetitive. "Stay All Night" sounds similar to "Crawling Kingsnake." "Sad days, Lonely Nights" also sounds similar to those two as well, just louder and with a faster tempo. It also doesn''t help that most of the songs are about something you do in bed with your woman (trying to say that in the most family-friendly way possible), adding to the repetition. I''m not trying to be a prude, but there''s little variety here. I think you could look up any track from this album on YouTube and get a good idea about what the rest of this album will sound like.

I don''t want to give this album a bad review. I still prefer this over most music nowadays. But that''s true of all the Black Keys albums in my experience, and as most of them go, this one was kinda weak by comparison. I guess if you love the blues, you''ll enjoy this more than I did. But if you expect more, I recommend giving this one a hard pass, and listening to the Keys'' earlier works.

I guess Dan Auerbach can do anything he wants now and sound great. The last black keys album let’s rock was I think their ultimate best sounding record of all time every song was a gym, Delta Creme on the other hand is filled with classic blues riffs featuring songs from Muddy Waters Junior Kimbra and more of the Delta scene. This album has an excellent sound great guitar work and the blues is timeless ,However myself I do get a little tired of hearing the same refs however good classic they may be this sounds like an old cream album with much better production.

The Black Keys return to their badass roots and I am delighted. I was not happy with their last release but this one proves that these dudes know how to rock. Backed by two extremely talented musicians the band sounds great with a fuller sound than previously. Classic material can be mined forever: Crawling Kingsnake, Stay All Night, Going Down South, Sad Days, Lonely Nights. The original material that Junior Kimbrough had played with variation for years and years, that is where the blues come from. Turn it up loud and feel it pulse through your body; this is the Black Keys at their best and it is a sound that is as old as mankind. Thank goodness The Black Keys realized that this is the source, the river that leads to the oceans of The Blues!

I love this new release from the Black Keys as they return to playing powerful and moving hill country Blues classics from some of the old masters of the craft - namely Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside. The bass line grabs you in the chest and the selections are powerful, while at the same time relaxed and in a groove. This isn''t a old Blues riot, rather a supple garage session with style that feels tight and in harmony. It is an homage to the Black Keys beginnings but delivered with the maturity and experience of 9 prior albums and 20 years of evolution. Old school fans should love this release and the more adventurous who joined the journey later will get a taste of The Black Keys foundation.

I had never heard this band before but I love good blues so I bought the CD. I buy CD''s because I don''t like the MP3 compression so production values matter to me. I want to hear every nuance of the music. I found the music repetitive to the point of annoyance. The repetitive rhythmic bass and drum effect that is in every song gets really old. While this works with the acoustic blues roots this music is taken from, there are nuances in the songs themselves that don''t translate well to fast, overly processed interpretations.

What I disliked even more is the muddy production values. I was going to give this 3 stars if all their music sounded like it was recorded in a fish tank. It does not.

I want to hear a bass that sounds like a bass, and a clear ringing lead. In blues the bass is as important as the lead. While the lead did stick out, it hovered over a mess of jumbled tone that sounded like an old woofer I just threw out!! Nothing in the background stood out and while the bass guitar merged with the drums, even the vocals and lead sounded muted.

I didn''t really think The Black Keys would ever sound like this again. I loved their first two or three albums because of the raw and ragged blues sound, but as time went on their output changed and became more sophisticated, and for me they lost something of what made them so exciting. Delta Kream is them harking back to what they do best. The production sound is a lot meatier and more confident than it was on The Big Come Up but I think it still sounds authenticially bluesy from start to finish. Welcome back guys!

Not one to sit and listen to with reflection, more a back soundtrack to whatever you happen to be doing and I found this CD fine in the car but sincerely doubt I will ever take time to really take it in. I read the review in Classic Rock magazine and bought it based on that but have to say I am a little disappointed. However, it fills a gap and I have heard worse but it is more ditty than deep!
